Battery Worse than iPhones...Is it Sense?; Other Notes/Questions

Alright, I work at Apple and deal with iPhones on a daily basis. I know how to tweak the settings so the phone makes it through a damn day.

I woke up at like 6am, and unplugged my phone which was charged. I just got up now (9:30) and my battery was 86%.....

Does Sense UI kill the battery?

As far as my understanding these are the modifiable settings;

Wi-Fi - works fine. I disable mobile network and it still runs fast.

"Mobile Network" - 3G....if you turn this off though it is just a regular cell phone and ceases to be able to use smartphone functions. No option of using an edge network.

AirPlane Mode - I switch this one when I get into the subway. Supposed to help.

GPS - I keep this off and only flick it on when I need to use maps function.

I feel like im relying on TasKiller too much. I'm afraid to use most of the basic functions of my phone because it's my actual cell phone, and i don't want to not be able to make calls if i have to.

Am I missing something magical here, or does the battery just suck this much?
