Dont know if you're still stuck on the SMS/Contacts issue but we need to disable HTC Contact Picker. ahuskins posted this awhile back (of course "awhile back" on THIS thread could mean 30 minutes ago

Now when you go to send a new SMS, hit Menu/Add Recipient and your Contacts will come up.
