No, as I mentioned the phone needs a PRL which tells it which networks it is allowed to connect to. The PRL is a file that is normally loaded at the factory but can be loaded by an end-user if you have the proper tools.
Cricket may know a shortcut to changing the PRL or they may be able to load the new PRL in-store. I've never dealt with them so I don't know. But I don't think there is any harm in calling them back to tell them that you're getting an error message when you try doing the activation.
