It was the only way that did work for me.. When I started with activesync method it got to the end of the backup phase then disconnected from activesync and from there was nothing but problems. I had done a backup of my phone so restored it and then tried again and again but nothing, it would stop after copy files portion not even going as far as the first time, even tried on a different pc incase that was it..

Anyway, copied my sdcard data to my desktop, formatted card and did the update from there, worked perfectly.. copied my sdcard data back to the card and reinsalled programs. I first did a partial restore from my back up trying different pieces to restore but in the end only restored mydocuments and PIM.. left the rest alone.

I had a few problems after with the phone freezing which it never/rarely had done and with bluetooth being quirky but it seems to have settled down now.

OH>. one funky problem, not known if related or not. I had a screen protector on there, all was fine before and after update. I changed protectors today (updated yesterday) and when the new protector is on the touch screeen doesn't work. I installed it several times and same result (no protector touch works/protector touch doesn't work). Same protector on verizon 750v and works fine so its not the product.. go figure.
