A working bypass that I started a few days back was to install Rhodium Keyboard Control and map the ok hardkey to close an app on long hold. Works well once you start to ignore the on screen X.

An alternative is to use AE Button plus to map the "Left Arrow" key (next to the end call button) to the program "Zapit" (freeware) with a single click and to its normal function as a double click. It lets you close the running app or alternatively leave it open but return to the Today screen.
