Users that see this type of behavior, like when you're in a bad signal area, might also notice a significant battery drain. This is the case for me when I travel to NY to visit family. My device turns on and off looking for a solid signal...and the battery goes to the dumper.
EDIT: I have not really tested changing radios in this environment to see if helps, but would suggest that to folks who are experiencing this frequently. ...I may do it when I travel home for the holiday to see whats up.

Thanks, thats what I figured it was or might have been since mine would do the same traveling on the 15 in San Diego. I have tried a different radio to see if it would help but it still does it in the same areas. So thats why it also leads me to beleive its a signal change from the towers that you are coming in to like you were saying.
I did notice when I was stationed in NY that my battery died faster. It almost lead me to go back to my old treo phone. Good thing I got stationed here in San Diego.
