Tweaking for beginners!
I was tolerating my 20 key keyboard, but really wanted something better. I was afraid this whole tweaking thing was over my head, but I read this thread and figured I'd try it.
Wow. I'm entirely a geek-in-training and I was able to make this work. (Step by step instructions for geeks-in-training to follow)
I downloaded the cab files for Pocket CM keyboard and for Sipchange, as well as the .exe file for ceregedit_setup onto my PC (keeping them all in a convenient sub-folder on my PC for easy access later in case I ever crash and need to rebuild, also included a text file with the registry path/edit).
First I used activesync to copy the Pocket CM .cab file onto the touch. Ran the cab file from the touch so the program loaded. Tested it, found I did indeed have the blank typing problem.
Then I physically disconnected the Touch, and loaded CEregedit onto my computer (following instructions about closing all other open programs, of course). Physically reconnected the Touch, opened CEregedit on the PC, hit F1 to connect, and drilled down through the file folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tegic\eT9\
Highlighted the key "XT9SupportMSSip" (in the list of keys in the right-side window, way at the bottom) rightclicked to get a drop down of options, hit edit, changed the value from "0" to "1." Exited CEregedit on my PC.
Copied the .cab file for Sipchange (using activesync) from PC to Touch.
Turned of the Touch, physically disconnected it. (I think I soft reset around here for good measure - probably unnecessary!)
Ran the .cab file for Sipchange. Opened sipchange from my program folder. Changed my default SIP to PCM keyboard. Opened PIE (pocket internet explorer) to see if everything was working -- and it was!
I know this is probably way too detailed and imprecise for the real geeks here, but it seems like some newbies like me are trying to figure this one out.
