Maybe it doesn't FULLY support them or has issues but it will use them.

I agree, they cannot be "not supported" or they wouldn't work at all or let you assign them... I do not believe that you can have a mp3 be anything other than a voice call ringtone. If you go to
Notifications and try to assign a ringer for...lets say a new text message...your custom mp3 ringtones are not in the list to choose from... I have been converting mp3 to wma and dropping them in the
Windows\ directory and then they are in the list to choose from in
Notifications.
