after you root, you can turn off the phone and turn it on holding the power and menu til the recovery screen shows up, there u can make a backup using nandroid... after thats over, you can go about your biz... i didnt have to flash to the backup, i just backed up the original... people usually create the backup and flash it to make sure they are rooted...i just downloaded a app that needs root to install and it worked... nandroid is probably just the phones program to recover/flash firmware...
