I disagree, to a point. I like the freedom to walk around with my laptop without the phone dangling along. And I can leave it on a wall charger in a convenient location, which charges it much better (though wifi needs more charge, so that's a wash, I guess). In the car, I have 110volt invertors if I am online long enough to warrant charging the laptop, and use the 12volt power port for the phone, as usual. I prefer not to have any cords hooked to the laptop in the car, if possible, because of the extra care needed not to put pressure on the connection.
