the gift certificate should still be valid. remember you don't type the gift code into the coupon code box on the cart screen. The gift code box should have shown up after you click the big check out button. But it seems they remove the gift certificate box during the final checkout process. you probably will be able to use the gift code when they put it back after the sale so it's not worthless.
Sorry, that it didn't work for you. But I did try it and it got my orders through.
