i used to work in retail. salespeople will lie for the following reasons. 1) to give an impression that they know what they are talking about - since some buyers wont buy when the answer is I dont know. 2) they want to steer you to a specific product because the commission on it will be better. 3) they are out of stock on a certain product and again want to steer you to one they have since they will make some kind of commission. 4) they are overstocked on a certain product and have incentives in place for getting that product out the door.
actually, the list goes on... but those are some of the reasons.
