I doubt HTC optimized their Dialer for that many contacts. The Touch Pro dialer app is heavily customized by HTC.
Not sure you can do anything short of shave your contacts...
You are def. an outlier. Not many people have that many contacts and the CPU in the phone and/or the I/O subsystem just can't crunch that much data that fast.
