This is so you can basically use your phone with a different carrier. I>E use Sprint phone on Tmobile network. While the phone is already unlocked for international world use when travelling abroad, the SIM is locked for domestic US use. So if you wanted to use a different carrier within US you would need to unlock SIM. There are also a few other reasons you might want to do this such as : if you are using a TP2 from work and on weekends you want to use as personal phone, you might need it unlocked so you could have your own account on another carrier, also if you live in an area with bad coverage on one network, you may have a reason to use another network. I am sure there are other scenarios but I believe that;s the gist of it. You really should not need it if you are just travelling abroad as it is already unlocked in Sprints case. I believe with Verizon all you have to do is call and request an unlock if you eet certain account requirements.
