Re: Is there a free backup utility that works?
I am not going to read through more than the 1st page now, as I've used them all, but I have to say SPB Backup is weel worth the money, and I am no longer willing to pay for Resco or many other things I have paid for. But becuase of the SUPREME IMPORTANCE of full backups before doing installs of software (if you are like me, you install a lot on some days/nights), I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH how important it is to be be able to quickly unwind things if they go sour. The new version of SPB Backup does a full backup in less than 5 minutes, so I do one after every few installs of software, even if their isn't an obvious issue yet. And I ALWAYS do a nightly scheduled backup, which also ends with a soft-reset.
NOT having and properly using this software (SPB Backup, "maybe" Sprite is as good, but evidence is not so far) is the reason for so many posts THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED if people backed up the way I do. All the crying "I'm afraid I'll have to hard-reset", etc., goes AWAY if people follow this procedure. Dashwire, PimBackup, etc., DO NOT SOLVE all the issues, the just keep it from being a complete catostophe. But jusdicious use of SPB Backup makes it PAINLESS, anything you.
I'm making this strong statement because I'm beginning to think that people who ignore this are a leading contributor to the overload this site is seeing.
