free word of mouth advertising is almost as good as cold hard cash. With Sprint reps directing people to the developers, it gives the people a chance to donate. Sprint isnt condoning the action as an official solution, its just a temp fix found by the community. As the posts on that thread say, be patient an update/fix will come as soon as its ready.
