Ugh, frustrating I'm sure! I turned this up in a Google search too, but it was also in a thread about charging in the car so you might already have seen it:

i disconnect the phone from usb port
turn phone off
go into computer task manager and end the 2 active sync processes
then i restart active sync
then reconnect the phone and turn phone on
