I appreciate your points kern417 and believe it or not I am very fond of Verizon and want to remain with them too (kinda why I'm actually so big on this) and I have no doubt that if a data plan connection is present that there could be connections made (which why they shouldn't be that way is another story) but I have read many many posts on people who have performed data connection lockouts on their WM devices to prevent those and had them like that for years and never had any hardship in using the device or ill effects to the WM system and were completely capable of using WiFi for internet access.
As well I learned another interesting thing today at least with Verizon and I’m not 100% sure this is still the case today but back when they started this about a year ago, while they are making the public get these data plans, it is not required if you buy a device like this under a government account.
So if it is not required for them to use the device, why is it required for us?
Actually I think as far as Verizon has stated, which they seem the have been very careful to do just the right way or only under a good amount of duress, that from a mechanical stand point it is not a absolute necessity that it have a data connection for the device and operation system to completely function correctly as it is made but that the whole reason for this is to not end up charging the customer for erroneous data charges such as the ones you spoke of.
But again that is just a capable of being done with a data lockout, which I still don’t understand why that isn’t just the way the device is setup by them if you don’t have a data account from the start.
Again to be able to do that but then to not to and then say oh, we have to charge a mandatory $29.00 data plan as the solution to protect our customers is just ridicules.
If you don’t have a data plan that just lock out the data connection from being made just the same as all other services that would be possible are done if they are not being paid for. It’s that simple.
And if there any periodic hard or software updates that need to be made then just let the customer do that via the usb sync connection.
