Well, that is strange. The only part I can comment on is it not reading through the card reader on the PC because the reader might not support SDHC which is why it would read the 512mb but not the 4gb.
I would say to try it out again in the Touch but just to make sure to ActiveSync all important information just incase it might do it again, in that case ask NewEgg for an RMA.
