I was also in the same boat, I was on my 4th TP1, 3 replacements because of the same reason. Then I got TP2. I would be pissed off if it is happening to my TP2.
I have almost figured it out how it is happening. If you put the phone in your jeans pocket, facing the screen inward keeping the screen pressed against your legs, in a very moist atmosphere, like near the seashore, lake, or even in the bathroom, this may happen. I agree the TP1 screen is of very poor quality, and I do feel the same poor quality when I touch(or press) the TP2.
Another observation, on a good TP1 screen, you could see two reflections(very close to each other, one may be inside another reflection) of a light bulb, if you hold it an angle to see the bulb reflection. But on the defective one, you would see these two reflections are far from each other. which means, the outer layer is really bend inward in the center.
I hope this helps..
