It is Power button, down volume, bottome right hard buttone (below the back arrow), and the reset button on the back. Hold all of them for about 5 seconds and i will boot to the bootloader. You might need to get someone else to help you being that your volume isnt working properly but you should be able to push it with anything small like a tooth pick or something.
No its vol down, then reset and the last button is power (while not letting go of any resulting in holding all three at the same time, but order does matter, its finnicky any other way). In fact sometimes the device has to be powered down(i.e in standby or off) in order to do it. It works every single time when I do it in this marnor and in this order.

edit: by any chance do you know if the button you took off had a metal contact on the back? Perhaps you may need to use something metal to press it, like a paper clip.

As for activesync connections.. good luck.. once your phone is stuck on boot, its pretty much impossible to get windows to read it, nor will it force it back into bootloader if you try to flash. The only way I am aware is to go into the bootloader, and if he can't do that, he could be in trouble.
