I think at least some type of authentication is necessary. ANY authentication is better than none.

The default WM pin lock is pretty secure. In order for someone to access your phone, they'd have to hard reset it which would get rid of all of your data. WM's default pin lock is actually required for some exchange servers depending on that server's security settings.

I just chose this one because its much easier to slide my thumb around to enter the pattern rather than type in a pin. And my mail is coming from a linux based server with IMAP, so the WM pin lock isn't required.

S2U2 also has pin authentication, but I'm not sure how secure it is.
