Edit: Well this might help with troubleshooting but I don't think it would be a fix.
"Radio / 3G mode
By default when WMLongLife switches to 3G, it uses the 3G (auto) mode. This lets your radio decide whether to use 2G or 3G, based on signal. The other mode is 3G (only). This mode will force the radio to use only 3G, and you will have no signal if only 2G is available."
The way I see it is we would have to set 3G only mode to see if it would 'stick' but then it says you have no signal in a 2G area. Since voice/data calls use 1X on CDMA phones, it seems this be completely shut off if we get stuck in 1X. I dunno...
