Greetings guys and gals

Is there any way to disable the on screen notifications that produce the "notifications" softbutton?

I like to use my actions softbutton, but cannot when I get one message it replaces the "action" softkey with "notifications"

I find it redundant and non needed. I can see I have voicemail etc ... its driving me nuts
