I'm sure there's a reason for the mic placement (engineering & design, must have some reason). But what are you keeping in your pockets? I can't imagine the mic hole collects stuff and the usb doesn't. I carry mine in my pocket (wrapped in a microfiber cloth) until I get a nice pouch for the phone, but I don't have any problems that I notice.
I do remember the speaker slot of my TP1 collected pocket stuff and dust, so I would clean it with a Q-tip. After that, good as new.
