Well I would have to say, If you are in EVDO are then it shouldn't be killing your battery, but if you are stuck in 1x or even switching between both then that can and will kill the battery. I don't use WiFi to much only when I am at work or streaming video at my house, but I found with the TP2 the battery (at least mine) last 10x longer than the TP1. Example.... With the TP1 I would only get 3 hrs of standby and the battery is dead, because of searching for service or just using wifi at work. Now with my TP2 I am at work with service (goes between 1x and EV) and wifi on the whole time I only lose 30% of the battery in a 9 hr period. So it depends on your service area do you get EV or 1x?
