A friend of mine had a contact in VZW HQ IT that could change them in the DMD from Alltel (restricted) to VZW but said that he stopped doing it and hasn't found anyone else willing to do it. In short, it can be done, but because of the merger it has made getting Alltel devices working on VZW accounts nearly impossible unless they were allready loaded as a VZW device prior to the merger of the DMDs.
thats what i have been doing with sprint phones telling verizon to put in paper as if it was a alltel device but like u said they have merged!!
