start > settings > system tab > test messaging (on the bottom) click the drop down menu and click classic. it will tell you ya need a restart. after that you got classic messaging.
what rom/os are you running that you dont see this?

the problem is he doesn't have the Text Messages icon. i don't know of any other way to change that setting. do you?
