It isn't that they call it different things, they are different technologies using different frequencies. CDMA uses EvDO format for their 3G technology. CDMA is Verizon, Altell, USCC, Sprint and some other MVNOs and smaller carriers. GSM is AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile and possibly some other small carriers and some MVNOs.

At any rate a CDMA radio cannot use a GSM tower and vice versa. The GSM 3G is based on WCDMA, but is still a GSM only thing as far as I know.

Also EDGE is not 3G, is is a 2G technology. Some argue that it is really 2.5G, but whatever. EDGE is the fallback for UMTS. Just like 1xRTT is the rollback for EvDO.
