Opera still runs in the background when push is disabled. There is a cab floating around that automatically removes Opera from the background while turning off push internet. Just be warned that Opera opens dramatically slower. Think how slow it was opening for the first time, when you saw the HTC logo come up while you waited. It will do that everytime, but then give you back almost 10mb of memory.
