I had the same issue on day one (two days ago with VZ TP2) and a *228, option 1 had no effect but a second attempt about 30 minutes later got me back on 3G since, even with multiple soft resets. When it was acting up, I was within visual site of a tower with full signal strength. Went for a drive around my house and saw the 1X icon briefly switch to 3G and the number of bars drop to 1 then it switched back to 1X with a full signal. So far, I've not seen it drop back to 1X.

Edit: And, no, never had a hacked Sprint TP1 on VZ.
