Not true at all. My Diamond is deactivated and I had it in my car today. I put on iGo as I was driving. It took a while to finally get a lock but it most certaintly did and it stayed connected without a problem. These devices have stand alone gps chips and do not require service. If they didn't you would not be able to get a lock at all no matter what. Not even for a second. But using a-gps as well which allows you to use cell towers in addition to the gps chip, it offers a quicker lock and supposedly more acurate spotting.
So once again, you do not need to have service to use your gps in your phone. Period.
