Maybe a difference between Sprint and Verizon, but I just verified my claim and I'm correct for the Sprint version. Holding down the end button puts the phone into airplane mode automatically instead of having to drill down into two menus. The device itself is still powered on and you can use all other features other than radio type functions.

This is why I installed the software tool recommended by Mighty Mike.
