AT&T did not buy Cingular, It was Cingular (Southwestern Bell and Bell South partnership) that bought AT&T Wireless first from MaBell, then SBC bought Bell South, Pacific Bell then swallowed MaBell at last, then finally, SBC renamed itself AT&T to complete the cycle that started back in 1983.
