I had another thought on your statement. If changing that value defaults to the HTC pop ups, then those can be controlled by the Sounds/Notifications Settings...not having my TP2 yet is frustrating because I can't try it myself. But unless the TP2 revamped the Sounds/Notifications Settings then you may be able to change the dword value in the registry then go in and un-select the box to show pop ups...maybe???
