We tried it, they told us it's unlocked, and fact is IT IS.

... EXCEPT for going onto the US-based GSM networks. It doesn't matter WHAT SIM card you put in there, local (home service) or international (roaming onto), as long as it sees going onto an US-based GSM network, it'll just refuse to work.
