As for speeds being faster via USB, it is not true. I have not seen any proof of that.

Both USB and WIFI transfer rates are beyond your cellphone service download speed so it boils down to overhead and transfer latency.

USB as a specification isn't very media friendly.
WIFI has to do data encryption.

In the end though, both are around equal, you shouldn't see any performance deterioration either way.

As for battery, WIFI obviously would drain more..but if its plugged in, it makes no difference except once plugged in it is more convenient to carry a laptop around
