Well as I suspected, as long as it knows it's in the States (i.e., GSM sees the US towers), it will block the GSM part.
So now the ONLY way is to try it OUTSIDE of the States.
I will be going to China in 2 weeks and will have a prepaid China Telecom SIM once I arrive in Canton, I will pop that sucker in and see if it works.
