I had this problem too when switching to NRGrom. flashing to a different radio helped me regain data while roaming. Use the main forums radio thread for radios to try.
FYI - I have Sprint, and the above mentioned problem occured on the stock sprint radio. I flashed to the latest verizon radio. The verizon radio has been great; better signal, battery life, and the roaming issue got fixed.
