When the 6800 first came out (December '07), I called Asurion and said I needed a replacement. Being it was my third 6700, I asked if they could give me the upgrade. She told me to hold on, and came back and said she was shipping out a 6800 to me.

I tried the same thing last month, and said I already had two 6800's, and wanted the Touch Pro. I talked to three people, and while one tried, the final answer was no. I then wrote a nasty e-mail to corporate, stating how I was leaving Asurion because one promised me the Touch Pro, and then said no. The next day the corporate CEO's office called me, and said they were very sorry, blah, blah, blah. The next day, I got the Touch Pro in the mail.

I've done almost the same thing. Bought the 6700 on ebay for about 250 a bit after release. Put insurance on it, and I just find things wrong with the phone I have to get upgraded. I have not payed for a phone since. I think I'm actually going to buy the TP2 though, I want it the moment it is available...
