That is BS that they're feeding you. Sprint used to cancel contracts if they couldn't provide service in an area you moved to. What you need to do is file with the BBB over this. You'll find Sprint will change their attitude because I know of many people who used and had their contract cancelled with no ETF.
They're going to try to 'deal' with you to get the BBB entry removed/resolved. Do the BBB first, sell the phone, cancel and pay ETF and when Sprint finally wants to talk to you tell them to sod off and that mark is staying because they won't call you tomorrow but like two months later over it.
Make sure you document everything. Call in a few more times and get peoples information.
