I have a solution for this, which I think may work for others as well. I forward my calls to my house phone/hotel phone/work phone/wife's cell phone/whatever when I know I'm going to tether and then turn it off after. I still get my calls and the tethering goes on uninterrupted.

Note: Depending on your carrier you may get charged double airtime as it is technically 2 calls. One coming in and then one forwarding to somewhere else. Nights and weekends (if you get that free on your cellular plan) would be free on forwarding too. With Verizon, to tether you dial *72[PhoneNumberToFowardCallsTo] (i.e.: *7212125555555). You dial *73 to cancel the forwarding after.

(Disclaimer: YMMV, check w/ your cellular provider for forwarding information)
