I upgraded to the Telus radio & it didn't wipe out my settings. I think there's just something in the OEM ROM, combined with the Radio that wipes everything out. The consensus seems to be to try different radios and then do a ##DEBUG# (the code is 183729) and then look at the signal strength in the field trial app that pops up. The lower the dbm value the better. I'm not really sure I gained much benefit with the Telus radio, but I stuck with it anyway. My only recommendation is to stay away from the Verizon radio. I couldn't get GPS working with it.
