For Sprint, the best customer care you'll get will typically be at a Sprint repair center (in person). Over the phone, you're dealing (in most cases) w/ Asurion (for replacements, insurance claims, etc.).

This is very true, plus the $100 deductable would've been a non-factor here as they do not require it (unless you lose the phone entirely, you should never deal with Asurion 1st).
You'd probably have a TouchPro by now at no cost, dealing with Sprint in person 1st.
I recieved my HTC Diamond at no cost/penalty when my Mogul broke, using this method.
