I think the screen "surface" probably doesn't help the "wow" factor. I know with the iPhone, the "glass" screen and the UI underneath make up for the cool factor, even being at a lower resolution.
Take the same video on both and I think you'll be happy to see the TP2 coming out way, way ahead.
But I don't think anything will beat the coolness of the Pre or iPhone UI, which I think make a huge bit of difference.
Think about it this way - Imagine running XP on a 42" monitor compared to running Vista on the same monitor. XP would look dirty as can be in comparison to Vista
