Have you tried a different cable? My original HTC usb cable got a bit frayed and would only charge the phone and not connect to activesync. Try any Mini-USB cable and see if you have better luck - it doesn't have to be the specific HTC version of the plug.

I got this solution (that I should have figured out myself) after an hour on the phone with Sprint tech support. They first sent me a refurbished replacement phone, and when I called to say it still didn't work, the tech I spoke to the second time suggested the cable. I sent back the replacement and haven't had a problem since then.
