With regards to the slowdown, part of it is because the images and stuff aren't cached on people's computers yet, so every user online has to redownload all of the images. Once their cache gets built up things should speed up.

I'm going to try tweaking the style some tonight, but I agree that its more professional, which is the look Mike was wanting to go for.
