Smartlock or csdevctrl seem to work OK but the lockscreen is too slow to load for my tastes so I don't use it.

Are you using TF3D with the default lock screen in your testing?
If so, does TF3D pop up over the lock screen after a few seconds? (TF3D responds to touches but the start menu/soft keys won't till you turn the device off and back on again to force the lock screen to the top so you can unlock it before TF3D goes over it again).
