Yes, the cable was pushed all the way in and it fits in there precisely and yes I have tried all the different colors.
I don't see how the cable could pose a problem as the pinout matches the one on iPod Video with the exception of pins 4 and 1 being swapped. I confirmed it using an ohm-meter.

As for the popup screen, I did got it, and selected PAL as I live in Scandinavia.
