Well the solution I have used for this is to create a VPN connection and once I'm connected to my desktop via VPN start RDC.

So far, it has been flawless.

EDIT: Of course, the RDC IP address has to point to the local network (192.168.x.x), not to the public IP. The VPN does need the public IP.

EDIT2: Even better, with VPN and a file explorer (like resco) you can even access files and get them on your phone. From there, the possibilities are endless: you can edit them (documents), send them by email, export them to another computer (by using the TP as a flash drive or disk drive), etc...
